These stories were collected in various parts of Greenland, taken down from the lips of the Eskimo story-tellers themselves, by Knud Rasmussen, the Danish explorer. No man is better qualified to tell the story of Greenland, or the stories of its people. Knud Rasmussen is himself partly of Eskimo origin; his childhood was spent in Greenland, and to Greenland he returned again and again, studying, exploring, crossing the desert of the inland ice, making unique collections of material, tangible and otherwise, from all parts of that vast and little-known land, and his achievements on these various expeditions have gained for him much honour and the appreciation of many learned societies. But it is as an interpreter of native life, of the ways and customs of the Eskimos, that he has done his greatest work. “Kunúnguaq”—that is his native name—is known throughout the country and possesses the confidence of the natives to a superlative degree, forming himself, as it were, a link between them and the rest of the world. Such work, as regards its hither side, must naturally consist to a great extent of scientific treatises, collections of facts and specimens, all requiring previous knowledge of the subject for their proper comprehension. These have their great value as additions to the sum of human knowledge, but they remain unknown to the majority of men. The present volume is designed to be essentially a popular, as distinct from a scientific work.

very interesting how nature fits into the stories
Good book. Liked it.
I read a Danish version many years ago and this free english kindle version is in no way less readable and recommendable. Common sense advise, ,nature, magic and mysteriously with hints to the western culture that is met with at the time of Knud Rasmussen.

The only thing I would like in my free version is story tittles with bold characters
I love learning about differant cultural tales. This book is a real treasure.I know some of the history and life styles of the Eskimo tribes and their beliefs and ways of life even to modern times. This just added another fasanating level. As with all tales told for countless generations, Some may be bewildered at times, Just stop and think of the people and culture and you will be truly amazed.
I give this book 5 stars as a research vessel. Maybe less for just a general reading experience.
I like stories especially well written books that allow one's imagination to seek its own level and involvement in the presented story.

It is always a refreshing time to become immersed without the distraction of movie/cable/TV commercials, inappropriate sexual scenes, crude language and actions supported by annoying colors, disgusting switching between unrelated other themes, loud sounds and noise (?music?) to support extremely poor content, and people reading their lines.

I recommend this book for those who like to use their imagination.
Eskimo Folk-Tales is an interesting volume of stories from an oft-overlook cultural group. According to the introduction, the tales are meant to be a 'popular collection', rather than a historical (or anthropological) one. Thus some of the tales have been altered for the common reader, but the introduction also refers the scholar back the original works (which are not published, but at least used to be available for the asking).

This is definitely a volume of tales for adults. It contains lots of wife-switching and random violence that would not be appropriate for younger audiences.

There is a distinct lack of illustrations, which the introduction waxes poetical about, so the lack of them (and the continued placement of the captions in the text) is really noticeable. The page numbers are left in the text, and are also mysteriously hyper-linked to...themselves.

However, several of the stories have foot-notes, which are all properly linked, and also there is an active table of contents.

This volume contains 55 stories varying in length from two paragraphs up to 20% of the book.
